The National Weather Service in Hastings has issued a

* Flash Flood Warning for…
Jewell County in north central Kansas…
Northwestern Mitchell County in north central Kansas…
Central Osborne County in north central Kansas…
Southeastern Smith County in north central Kansas…

* Until 515 AM CDT.

* At 1118 PM CDT, Doppler radar and automated rain gauges indicated
thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Between
2 and 4 inches of rain have fallen. The expected rainfall rate is
0.5 to 1.5 inches in 1 hour. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2
inches are possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is ongoing
or expected to begin shortly.

HAZARD…Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.

SOURCE…Radar and automated gauges.

IMPACT…Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas,
highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor
drainage and low-lying areas.

* Some locations that will experience flash flooding include…
Osborne, Downs, Mankato, Cawker City, Glen Elder, Jewell, Burr Oak,
Portis, Esbon, Ionia, Webber, Montrose and Lovewell State Park.

The heaviest rain amounts near 4 inches are from near Downs
northeastward into far southwest Jewell County.

Instructions

Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood
deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the
dangers of flooding.
